Bridget turned her full attention to the lady.

Felicity Pierce shook her head, making her flaxen curls bounce. “I understand the lure of a handsome face and sweet words, better than most. But do watch yourself where Russell Avery is concerned.”

“Captain Avery is only my friend,” Bridget protested, refusing to confide in this near stranger who clearly didn’t care for the captain at all.

“And I’m Josephine Bonaparte.” Lady Felicity’s brow furrowed. “I’m not blind, Miss Kelly. And I realize you don’t know me at all, but I know him. And I spent most of the summer and autumn consoling my dear friend Phoebe Greywood because of him. So just do be careful where your heart is concerned. He breaks them without thought or remorse.”

Phoebe Greywood? Captain Avery’s ex-fiancée? The one who’d run off with his brother? Bridget wasn’t certain Miss Greywood turned Mrs. Avery was worthy of such devotion. She certainly hadn’t been true to her betrothed, had she? And while Captain Avery seemed full of bravado to the rest of the world, Bridget had seen his face, heard his words when he talked with his brother that afternoon. The situation pained him, deeply, she was certain. Still, she didn’t expect Felicity Pierce to understand that or to even care, and Bridget certainly wasn’t going to confide in her. Instead, she feigned a smile and said, “Thank you, Lady Felicity.”

The blonde snorted. “It’s too late, isn’t it? He’s already ensnared your heart.”

Bridget only blinked at her companion. “Lady Felicity, I do appreciate your concern. But, truly, Captain Avery is but my friend, and these days I need all of those I can find.” A friend who seemed to understand her. A friend who made Bridget’s heart beat a little faster. A friend who said he wanted to kiss her. But Lady Felicity didn’t need to know about any of that.
